SCRD claims workplace safety award

The Sunshine Coast Regional District has received a provincial award recognizing improvements in workplace safety.

The regional district received the 2026 Safety Improvement Award from the B.C. Municipal Safety Association after significantly reducing workplace injuries.

The SCRD said its WorkSafeBC experience rating improved from 14.9 per cent in 2022 to two per cent in 2025. Its 2026 rating is now a discount of 2.2 per cent.

The improvements followed the creation of a full-time health and safety co-ordinator position in 2021, along with expanded training, inspections and workplace safety programs.

“This recognition reflects years of dedication and collaboration across the organization,” said Gerry Parker, senior manager of human resources. “Every employee, supervisor, manager and member of our Joint Health and Safety Committees has played an important role in strengthening our culture of safety. Together, we have reduced workplace injuries and created a safer, healthier workplace for our staff.”

The regional district received its Certificate of Recognition in 2024. The certification has helped generate annual WorkSafeBC premium savings of more than $80,000 since 2025.
