Sunshine Coast Regional District moves forward with solid waste management plan

The Sunshine Coast Regional District has hit a milestone they said will shape how waste is managed across the area well into the next decade.

According to the district, the plan has been in the works for the past three years and has been an effort between several branches of local government, while providing enhanced infrastructure and environmental protection.

“The plan is a result of collaboration with advisory committees, engagement with residents, local governments and First Nations,” said the district. “It establishes a long-term, community-informed roadmap for solid waste services, infrastructure investment and environmental stewardship.”

They indicated that the biggest component of the plan was derived from public engagement, and the district was able to draw from results to formulate a design the SCRD said was presented to local government across the region.

“The online survey was open for six weeks, alongside in-person engagement activities,” said the district. “Staff also presented the draft plan to local governments, resulting in letters of support from the District of Sechelt and Town of Gibsons for submission to the province.”

With plans having been adopted by the SCRD, the district said they can move forward with the final steps required under provincial guidelines.
