Sunshine Coast Foundation supports community projects with Mary Gordon Legacy Fund

The Sunshine Coast Foundation is supporting three community projects with grants funded by a $1-million legacy gift from Mary Gordon’s estate.

A news release from the foundation said a $750,000 gift received earlier this year, combined with a $250,000 gift received in 2023, brings Gordon’s total contribution since her death in 2021 to $1 million.

Gordon was director of nursing at Sechelt | shíshálh Hospital and supported causes including health care, seniors, youth, the arts, environmental initiatives and local businesses.

“Mary spent her career caring for others and healthcare remained one of her greatest passions throughout her life,” said Erin Storey, the foundation’s executive director. “These three projects reflect that commitment and address important health and wellness needs on the Sunshine Coast. We are honoured to help steward Mary’s generosity in a way that will benefit our community for many years.”

The foundation established several endowment funds in 2023 to support seniors, nursing and caregiving students, youth development and community well-being.

The foundation’s board of directors has approved three $10,000 grants from the latest gift. The funding will support Foundry Sunshine Coast, Mossy Rock Hospice and tutulshenam Healing House.

“Mary Gordon believed deeply in giving back to the community she loved and her generosity continues to create opportunities that might not otherwise be possible,” said Elfie Hofmann, the foundation’s board chair. “These grants are an important example of how philanthropy can strengthen our community today while helping address the needs of tomorrow. We hope Mary’s story encourages others to think about the impact they can have through their own charitable giving.”
