The Sunshine Coast Regional District is issuing a reminder to ensure any outdoor fires are properly monitored, contained and extinguished following an incident near the Roberts Creek Pier on Monday morning.
A statement from the SCRD said Roberts Creek Volunteer Fire Department members responded to a significant beach fire at about 7:45 a.m. to the left of the pier.
They said the fire was burning among driftwood logs and was not contained within a fire pit. Crews used roughly 1,500 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze.
“This incident occurred during weekday morning hours, when many of the fire department volunteers were at their regular jobs,” said a statement from the regional district. “Responding members worked hard and efficiently to bring the situation under control.”
Alcohol beverage containers were also found scattered around the area.
The SCRD said the situation was preventable.
