RCMP investigating structure fires in Sechelt’s closed Seawatch neighbourhood

Sunshine Coast RCMP are investigating two residential structure fires in Sechelt’s closed Seawatch neighbourhood.

Police responded to the fires around 11:40 a.m. Sept. 5.

Investigators are asking anyone who was near Gale Avenue North, Crowston Road or the Seawatch area between 9 and 11:45 a.m. that day to check for dashcam or CCTV footage.

RCMP are particularly interested in any suspicious people or vehicles. Police are also looking to identify the occupants of a dark, four-door SUV seen in the area, saying they may have information that could assist the investigation.

“The two fires are believed to have been deliberately set,” said a statement from Sunshine Coast RCMP. “The SeaWatch area has been closed to the public since 2019 and the homes were unoccupied.”

The Sechelt Volunteer Fire Department says access to the area is restricted and the fires are expected to continue smoking and off-gassing for several days.

District of Sechelt staff are asking the public to stay clear of the area and nearby residents to close their windows if they smell smoke.
