Man arrested after fire at downtown A&W

A man has been arrested in connection with a fire at a downtown Nanaimo A&W restaurant.

The fire was reported at about 4 a.m. on Aug. 4. Nanaimo RCMP said firefighters had the blaze under control before officers arrived.

The building sustained extensive damage. Investigators used security footage to identify a man who allegedly started the fire. He was arrested at about 11 a.m. the same day without incident.

“This fire had the potential to cause significant damage and place lives and neighbouring businesses at risk. Thanks to the swift and professional response of Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews, the fire was quickly contained before it could spread further. We take incidents of this nature very seriously and remain committed to holding those responsible accountable for actions that put our community at risk,” said Insp. Donovan Tait, operations officer for Nanaimo RCMP.

Investigators are looking for a witness who may be able to assist the investigation.

“This individual was seen driving a red Tesla into the parking lot just as the fire was starting. He then walked into the business to pick up his takeout food. The adult man left the scene but did call 911. His identity is unknown and investigators would like to speak with him,” reads an RCMP news release.

Police also asked anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line.
