Nanaimo RCMP investigate fire at Judo club

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a fire that caused extensive damage to the Nanaimo Judo Club on Machleary Street.

Officers were called to the building at about 5 a.m. on July 11 to assist Nanaimo Fire Rescue.

“It appeared that the fire originated in an exterior stairwell on the north side of the building before spreading into the structure through a ventilation system, then into the attic,” RCMP said in a news release. “Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the building with no secondary damage reported to other structures.”

Police said the building sustained extensive smoke and water damage.

Witnesses did not report seeing anyone leave the scene, and the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Police asked anyone with information that could assist the ongoing investigation to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line.
