City of Nanaimo plans to close major downtown intersection

Getting around downtown Nanaimo could get a bit slower starting in 2025 as the city plans to close the intersection of Bastion and Commercial Street.

According to the city, the road will be closed until late February for crews to drill and surface grout work as part of the Design Commercial Project to protect underground utilities and minimize any future incidents on the roadway.

They add although the intersection will be closed to vehicle traffic, it will be open for anyone walking, and consideration will be taken for any inconvenience.

“Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times,” they say. “Businesses will remain open as usual, and free two-hour parking is in place along the rest of Commercial Street, as well as on levels 2 and 3 of the Bastion Street Parkade.”

Mayor Leonard Krog says construction is an inconvenience, but to keep the city moving it’s needed.

“Construction’ and ‘detours’ are admittedly some of the least favourite words in our vocabulary, and yet, it’s impossible to keep up to our city’s growing infrastructure needs without them,” he says.

Construction is expected to start on Jan. 2.
