BC Supreme Court grants injunction to remove VIU encampment

Protestors at Vancouver Island Univeristy’s Palestine Solidarity Encampment (PSE) have 72 hours to pack up or be forced to leave after the BC Supreme Court granted the university an injunction yesterday.

The court order mandates that the encampments must be removed by 9:30 am this Sunday.

VIU says they have requested help from the RCMP to enforce the order if protestors do not comply.

“While we respect and support the right to peaceful protest and diverse viewpoints, today’s court order ensures that the campus quad is returned to the entire community and prevents any individual group from occupying a shared space for extended periods of time to promote a single perspective,” says VIU.

The Palestine Solidarity Encampment took to social media, reacting to the injunction.

“The justice system upholds colonial values of private property and VIU clearly shares the same values which would explain the extreme measures,” said the PSE on Instagram.

The PSE adds that a formal statement on what’s next for the encampment will be released later today.
