Designer chosen for new 306-bed long-term care facility

Island Health has picked the contractor to design a new long-term care home for Nanaimo.

Today the health authority announced Stantec will be responsible for designing the new facility, as well as similar projects in Campbell River and Colwood.

All three new homes will include gathering spaces, gardens, childcare centres and a design to help residents keep active and feel connected.

Stantec will be working with local First Nations and other partners to develop unique building elements that represent the values of each community.

The Nanaimo facility will include 306 beds, specialized care units, hospice care and other programs. It’s expected to open in 2027. All three projects together will add 765 beds for Vancouver Island.
