New Correctional Centre Open in Nanaimo

A new state-of-the-art correctional facility has opened in Nanaimo.

The province calls it a significant step forward in supporting community safety and advancing correctional services on Vancouver Island.

It expands remand capacity for Vancouver Island, and includes a unit for women, and has spaces for addictions treatment and counselling.

The campus-style Nanaimo Correctional Centre is located next to the original correctional centre.

The new NCC is designed to incorporate the evolution of correctional practices and has specialized areas to help people with complex mental-health needs and a sophisticated health-care centre.

Inspired by traditional Coast Salish plank houses, it’s designed to ensure safety and security, while focusing on healing, recovery and change.

Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Mike Farnworth, says the new centre is a “testament to our commitment to supporting those individuals and the dedicated correctional and health professionals who play a vital role in fostering safer communities.”

The new NCC was designed and built in line with changes to correctional practices and incorporates the use of natural light and building materials, but also has advanced security features to keep people safe.
