Nominations for Nanaimo’s 2024 Culture Awards officially open

The City of Nanaimo is once again showing its support for arts, culture, and recreation through the 2024 Culture Awards.

Nominations are now open for the community to recognize people and community groups they believe have made Nanaimo a culturally vibrant city.

According to the city, three categories have been selected and awards will be handed out for excellence in culture, honour in culture and emerging cultural leader (for those under 30).

The city will be accepting applications until Jan. 28, which can be submitted directly to their website.

Culture and special events manager Adrienne Breen says the selection process is fair and impartial, residents should feel free to nominate anyone they feel has contributed to these fields.

“Recipients are chosen based on nominations and are put forward by the community,” she says. “If someone in the arts and culture sector has made a difference nominate them.”

Mayor Leonard Krog says the awards play an important role in instilling support for culture in the city.

“The city’s culture awards are an opportunity to recognize the exceptional talent and achievement we are so lucky to call our own,” he says. “I encourage community members to submit their nominations for these prestigious awards.”

The awards are scheduled to be handed out at the Port Theatre on Apr. 3.

The culture awards have been an annual event for over 25 years and last year the city recognized Joel Good and Margot Holmes during a ceremony at the Port Theatre in April.
