New tourism campaign celebrates Nanaimo’s character and style

Tourism Nanaimo has unveiled a new brand campaign in what they’re calling a more refreshing image than what the city is used to.

The campaign is being labeled as Nanaimo Normal, and Tourism Nanaimo’s executive director Carly Pereboom says it is designed to celebrate the city’s eclectic character of unconventional style.

“The main selling point for many BC cities is often the beautiful nature that surrounds them,” she says. “With mountains on one side and an ocean on the other, Nanaimo’s no different.”

Pereboom adds the campaign will highlight the unexpected attractions including the diverse mix of individuals and will promote places and organizations in Nanaimo.

“We’re seeing more and more young entrepreneurs and creators choosing to make Nanaimo their home and contributing to a colourful, and thriving culture,” she says. “There has been a steady reinvestment over the last two years from restaurants, breweries, and some really cool boutique stores.

“There’s a community built on character and a being yourself attitude, and that’s what this campaign is all about.”

Tourism Nanaimo will kick off the campaign with a contest that provides an opportunity for locals to be featured and receive $500 to the charity of their choice and will be announced on May. 21.

According to the 2023 State of Nanaimo Economy an average of 3,400 new residents moved to the RDN over the past five years, and the number of business licenses issued in the region has increased by nine per cent.
