This fall The City of Nanaimo will start to dole out just over $1,000,000 to combat youth gun and gang violence.
The funding comes directly from the Federal Government through the Building Safer Communities initiative.
In the meantime, the city is looking for local programs to apply for money through the Nanaimo Youth Resilience Grants program.
The city has identified a few key areas of focus for the funds including safe youth gathering spaces and Youth Mentoring Programs.
“Improving public safety needs multiple approaches, including prevention. By supporting children and youth, we can strengthen their resilience and reduce the likelihood that vulnerable young people will be drawn into guns and gang violence.”
Groups engaged in youth gun and gang violence prevention can apply this month and receive the money this fall.
