Sechelt Nation signs on to clean energy MOU, hosting BC Hydro open house Thursday

The Sechelt First Nation is one of 13 First Nations signing on to a memorandum of understanding with the Clean Energy Association of BC.
The MOU was finalized earlier this week at the Association’s annual meeting in Vancouver
Chief Calvin Craigan says although the Sechelt are involved in several run-of-river hydro projects, clean energy goes beyond that.
Craigan adds the MOU creates a clear picture of what First Nations expect in terms of how clean energy projects should be handled on traditional territories, especially on environmental protection.
The Sliammon and Squamish Nations have also signed the MOU.
Sechelt First Nation members — and anybody else who’s interested — will get a chance Thursday to find out more about what’s happening at BC Hydro… including its efforts to do more business with First Nation-owned suppliers and recruit more First Nation employees.
Hydro representatives will also be on hand to talk about about things like Smart Meters and energy conservation programs.
The open house is at the Band Hall from 1 to 5.  There will be refreshments.
