Counterfeit $100 bills circulating

The Nanaimo RCMP is warning the public about a significant increase in individuals attempting to pass counterfeit Canadian currency at various retail outlets throughout Nanaimo.

There have been dozens of documented incidents, beginning on May 21st, with the last reported incident taking place on June 24th.

The incidents involve upwards of 4 or 5 suspects, with one being a woman.

RCMP say in a majority of incidents reported, 100 dollar bills were seized.

They all had the same serial number (EJS8511162).

Mounties say a common practice in passing counterfeit money is the individual usually purchases a small dollar value item thereby maximizing the amount of real money coming back to them.

RCMP say if you are passed a bill that you think is fake, politely refuse the note, then explain that you suspect that it may be counterfeit.
