MMBC says items it collects will not go to fuel incinerators

Directors at the Sunshine Coast Regional District have some tough questions about ties between incineration and the new recycling program rolling out in BC next month.

A site near Port Mellon is on Metro Vancouver’s short list for a waste-to-energy project, and some have speculated that the Multi Material BC system will end up sending recyclables to Metro’s existing and new incinerators.

Material collected will be sent to a Lower Mainland company called Green By Nature for processing.

Representatives from MMBC were at the SCRD Thursday, where managing director Allen Langdon said incineration is not an option under their contract with GBN

Langdon also says municipalities taking part in MMBC will get full reports on where items end up.
