Gibsons planning to survey residents on garbage/recycling options

Garbage collection contracts are usually pretty routine for local governments, but as the Town of Gibsons starts looking for a contractor for the next 2 to 3 years Councillors are wondering about the future of garbage and recycling.

Some areas on the Sunshine Coast are getting ready to go with curbside collection for recyclables under Multi Material BC, others are getting ready to test kitchen scraps collection for composting.

Councillor Lee Ann Johnson says it’s time to find out what Gibsons residents really want, and to make sure they fully understand the costs.

Councillor Dan Bouman argued for a shorter term contract in the order of 1 year, while Gibsons takes a close look at what it ought to do in the future especially about recycling.

A survey is in the works. It’s going to gauge not only what type of collection people want, but whether they have any appetite to pay the cost of those options
