Would-be thief caught by Woodgrove shoppers

Nanaimo RCMP say good Samaritans foiled a thief’s attempt to steal thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from Woodgrove Centre.

The incident happened Monday around 8:30pm. A man wearing a motorcycle helmet walked into Paris Jewelers, smashed display cases filled with gold chains and started stuffing them into a duffle bag.

When an employee grabbed him, the suspect dropped the bag and took off.

He was tackled by a customer but wriggled free and headed for the nearest exit. That’s when a woman realized what was happening and tripped him, and then her friend held him down with help from other shoppers.

30-year-old Craig Edward Truckle from Nanaimo has been formally charged with Theft over $5000 and Committing an Indictable Offence while wearing a mask.
