70th Anniversary Dutch-Canadian Friendship Tulip Garden planted in Nanaimo

700 red and white tulips were planted in Nanaimo next to the Cenotaph on Wednesday.

Nanaimo is one of 140 communities in Canada where 70th Anniversary Dutch-Canadian Friendship Tulip Gardens are being planted.

City Councillor Ian Thorpe, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, says the gardens are meant to commemorate the first 100,000 Dutch tulip bulbs sent to Canada in 1945.

Thorpe says he’s thrilled Nanaimo was selected to receive one of the gardens.

Rill Sutherland-Clarke planted a bulb in honour of her late husband, James H. Clarke, who was a Sergeant with the Canadian Scottish Regiment, B Company.

The tulip garden will be showcased during the 2016 Canadian Tulip Festival, and featured on the 2016 edition of Canada’s Garden Route.
