Fire swept through a vacant house on Eaton Street in south Nanaimo last night.
The blaze broke out around 9:45pm.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Tim Doyle says witnesses told crews some people had been squatting at the property.
Doyle says crews got the blaze under control fairly quickly and there was no one inside the house.
The investigation into the cause will continue this morning.
