Sechelt gets emergency resolution on spill readiness through AVICC

The Association of Vancouver Island Coastal Communities passed an emergency resolution at its AGM on the weekend, calling for an independent audit of oil spill preparedness in BC.

The resolution was put forward by representatives from the District of Sechelt in response to recent events in Vancouver.

The resolution says the audit is needed because, “The long-term viability and economies of BC coastal communities is dependent, in part, upon the protection and preservation of the local marine environment.”

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, meanwhile, says response to last week’s bunker oil spill in English Bay would have been better if the feds hadn’t closed the Coast Guard base at Kitsilano to save money.

Robertson now says the base should be reopened.
