Health authorities say flu season seems to have peaked

The BC Centre for Disease Control says it looks like we’ve passed the peak of what’s been a busy flu season.

Part of the reason it’s been buy is the imperfect match between the vaccine and the major strain – H3N2.

Dr. Paul Martiquet is the Sunshine Coast’s Medical Health Officer.

Dr. Charmaine Enns of Island Health says it’s the same on Vancouver Island, but it’s important to keep one thing in mind.

The BC CDC also says because H3N2 tends to hit older people hardest, they’ve seen a record number of outbreaks at long term care facilities.

Currently there’s just one outbreak in our area; at Trillium Lodge in Parksville.
