Sunny skies for opening day at Dakota Ridge; Potential buyer in the wings for Mt. Washington

The weather couldn’t be better for opening day at Dakota Ridge (image courtesy SCRD) on the Sunshine Coast, although they could do with some more snow.

Sunshine Coast Regional District Parks Planner Sam Adams says they’ve got 30 centimetres of snow, enough to open about 5 kilometres of cross country trail. But, Adams describes the conditions as “rustic”.  They’re also allowing some snowshoeing on the cross country trails that don’t have enough snow for skiing.

The Island’s only ski resort, Mount Washington, got their season underway just before Christmas, as the search for a buyer continues.

Resort President Peter Gibson says one serious potential buyer has come forward, but negotiations are on hold for now.

Gibson says he’s bound by a non-disclosure agreement and can’t offer any other details
