Two men in custody following fire at downtown Nanaimo buildings

Two men are in police custody in connection with an arson involving two unoccupied commercial buildings in the 400 block of Wentworth Street in Nanaimo.

According to a media release a front-line officer noticed the blaze on Saturday just before 8 p.m. and notified fire crews who responded immediately and extinguished the blaze but not before it extensively damaged the building.

R-C-M-P say the suspects were arrested a short distance from the fire and were remanded into police custody until their court appearance in Nanaimo on Aug. 22.

The building has been secured until inspectors can assess the structure and examine the extent of the damage.

Police say they are continuing their investigation and ask anyone with information to contact the non-emergency line at the Nanaimo RCMP detachment.
