RDN grant dollars support waste diversion

Two organizations in the Regional District of Nanaimo will receive a total of $219,200 to help support zero waste principles.

Loaves and Fishes Community Foodbank will get $119,200 from the RDN’s Zero Waste Recycling Funding and Light House Sustainability Society will get $100,000.

“With the RDN’s Zero Waste Recycling Funding program, we can support organizations whose innovative efforts are reducing waste and building a sustainable circular economy,” says Stuart McLean, RDN board chair. “Their work is bringing positive impacts not just for the environment, but also for our communities. By addressing current challenges, these projects are paving the way for a more sustainable future.”

The grants support waste diversion through initiatives such as research, programs to reduce waste, reusing materials and investigating barriers to recycling.

According to a news release, Loaves and Fishes will use the money to install a pallet racking system to increase storage at its new facility. It says this will contribute to more recovered food and greater operating efficiency.

Light House Sustainability will use the money to support its exchange program for excess and salvage building material.
