City of Nanaimo receives fourth major award for planning

The City of Nanaimo has received one of five awards recognizing them for a significant achievement in community planning.

According to the city, the award was announced at the 2023 National Planning Conference in Malaysia by the Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP) declaring the city’s plan of ‘Nanaimo ReImaged” as a significant milestone, and a model to follow.

“CAP has declared the City of Nanaimo’s plan as an ‘outstanding planning achievement in the Commonwealth’ in the Planning for Cities and Human Settlements category,” the city says.

The city says they’ve already received several awards for their plan, but this is the fourth major one Nanaimo has been able to bring in, all of which have been received in the past two years.

Mayor Leonard Krog says being recognized on an international level is a great achievement and just shows Nanaimo is on the right track.

“The city is very fortunate to be guided by an award-winning community plan that strives to create a sustainable city where we can all thrive within our environmental boundaries,” he says.

According to the city, CAP has been advancing planning across the Commonwealth for over 50 years and promotes planning as a fundamental for sustainable human development.

CAP brings 30 national professional planning organizations from around the world and represents nearly 40,000 professional planners.
