Residents should prepare in case of emergency, Regional District of Nanaimo

With Emergency Preparedness week starting Sunday, the Regional District of Nanaimo says they’re encouraging residents to learn how to protect themselves.

Emergency Preparedness Week is from May 5 to 11 and shows Canadians how they can remain vigilant in the face of wildfires, floods and earthquakes by providing awareness on how to prepare and what to prioritize when disaster strikes.

The district says having the knowledge and the ability to react when an emergency strikes reduces stress and pressure and allows for clear thinking.

“Having a plan helps us be prepared and self-sufficient and allows emergency responders to prioritize assistance where it is most needed,” the RDN says. “Everyone should be ready to take care of themselves for a minimum of 72 hours.”

They add creating a grab-and-go-bag with the essentials is an important part of being prepared for an emergency and recommend residents include food, important documents, batteries among other essentials for three days.

They add having access to alert systems through your phone, such as the Voyent Alert app, and subscribing to emergency notifications is also helpful.
