New e-bike program launches in Nanaimo

The City of Nanaimo has announced a new pilot program to improve transportation across the city.

According to the city, the project will begin with 16 parking zones placed in Nanaimo’s downtown area in the Old City Quarter, recreational spots in Maffeo Sutton Park and Bowen Park, and key commercial and residential centres.

They will add spots later at the BC Ferries and Hullo Ferries terminals.

Mayor Leonard Krog says the program is just one way on how the city plans to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance the viability of Nanaimo.

“The launch of the Evolve E-Bike Share program marks a significant step forward in our city’s journey towards sustainable transportation solutions,” he says. “I commend the collaborative efforts of all involved in making this initiative a reality and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have.”

Approximately 100 e-bikes are planned for launch with this program, and the city adds setting up access for one is very user friendly and simple.

“After downloading the app [Evo], users simply locate an available e-bike and unlock it,” the city says in a media release. “They can unlock it by scanning the bike QR code and then don a helmet and enjoy their ride.”

The city says the program is in conjunction with BCAA’s Evolve E-Bike Shar program and will provide residents with a new, convenient, sustainable, and affordable mobility option.
