Growing global pressures increase taxes, Town of Gibsons

The Town of Gibsons says the 2024 budget process is ending, and residents could see their taxes increase.

In an email, the town attributes global economic pressures and escalating construction costs to the increase and has asked council to consider making recommendations for an overall increase of eight per cent, with three per cent allocated for general operations and five per cent for future policing costs.

“The sewer and water utilities, updated costs will require $28 million to replace existing sewer infrastructure, and $12 million for water infrastructure, virtually doubling previous estimates,” the town says in a media release.

They add residents will see an increase of five per cent for sewer and water services, as well garbage and organics user rates will increase by $38 annually.

The town says council will have the chance to adopt the new Financial Plan and Annual tax Rate bylaws after staff have a chance to prepare an outline.
