Island Health declares COVID outbreak at NRGH

A COVID outbreak at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital has been declared, but the hospital says it is limited to a unit on the second floor.

According to Island Health, the outbreak was declared Jan. 3 and so far, only five COVID cases have been confirmed with patients experiencing mild symptoms.

They say the hospital has taken all precautions to limit the spread into other areas to contain the outbreak, and despite current conditions, NRGH remains a safe place to seek care and those who need treatment should not avoid coming to the hospital.

A media release states Island Health is following provincial regulations until the outbreak is over.

“Under current provincial public health guidance, we have excellent infection control and public health resources to reduce the risk of transmission of all communicable diseases within healthcare facilities,” the release says.
