Nanaimo RCMP say they have officially launched their Christmas Counterattack with several road checks being conducted with the hopes of deterring impaired driving.
The province has officially dubbed this year’s awareness campaign as ‘Light up the Province’ and so far, has stopped over 300 vehicles in Nanaimo with ten being charged for impairment.
Police say they were set up at several locations for a total of six hours on Dec. 2 and on top of the ten people charged several other violations were handed out including nine under the Motor Vehicle Act, which involved a 90-day diving prohibition and the person’s vehicle being impounded.

Reserve constable Gary O’Brien says public reception to the program has been positive.
“The officers later commented that they were overall pleased with the feedback they received,” he says. “They heard several times that their efforts were much appreciated.”
Police say they later determined the prohibited driver was over the legal limit and was issued with an appearance notice for Nanaimo Provincial Court in February.
RCMP reminds everyone to plan accordingly if they intend on drinking this holiday season by either using a taxi, calling a friend or staying the night.
