SCRD updates water conversation measures

Sunshine Coast Regional District says they are asking residents to observe caution when it comes to water consumption with increased temperatures and little rain in the forecast for the next few days.

The district says so far residents on the Chapman and South Pender Harbour water systems have been observing restrictions in their area, but they are asked to hold out longer as provincial water restrictions remain in effect.

“Now is the time to conserve, especially with the provincial drought likely to continue in the near future voluntary conservation measures are encouraged,” they say.

The regional district says they got some relief from the small amount of rain, but the drought has left them working to upgrade the system to keep up with the demand placed on the current supply.

“While the rainfall had a positive impact on the watershed by adding more to Chapman Creek and reducing draw from the lake, more rain is needed to recover the lake shortage used so far this year,” the district says.

In South Pender Harbour, the district says they are working to supplement the system with water from Harris Lake and the system is currently following stage 3 water conservation regulations.

Other systems on Egmont, Cove Cay, and North Pender Harbour water systems and groundwater sources in Langdale, Soames Point, and Granthams Landing remain at stage 1, with the Eastbourne Water system remaining at stage 4 conservation regulations.

The district says they have enacted restrictions to ensure adequate supply for emergency services and to extend the drinking water supply into December.
