Sunshine Coast cooling centers to stay open over weekend, water restrictions put in place

As the heatwave is promised to peter out over the weekend, the Sunshine Coast will be keeping its cooling centers open.

The SCRD kept its cooling centers open for the week, and they will continue to offer resources on heat preparedness, water, and an air conditioned area for anyone who needs it until Sunday.

The Gibsons & Area Community Centre will be open 9am to 5pm, with the cooling centre located in the main lobby area.

The Sechelt Aquatic Centre will be open 9am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 4:30pm on Sunday. The cooling centre is located in the swimming pool viewing area.

Yesterday, water restrictions were elevated to Stage 2 for anyone on the Chapman Water System. As of today, South Pender Water users are also on stage 2.

Residents are asked to please be mindful of their water use to ensure that water infrastructure— as the coast’s water treatment plants— are not at maximum capacity for extended periods.
