Nanaimo SPCA donation jars scooped up by thieves

The Nanaimo SPCA says one of its biggest fundraising sources has been hit by thieves.

Around a dozen SPCA donation jars have gone missing from local stores since the beginning of December.

Manager Leon Davis says the jars are always targets for thieves, and he thinks the spike in thefts may have happened because the thieves expected they’d be fuller at Christmas.  Davis says they’re not certain how much was lost, but it could be as much as 1-thousand dollars.

Davis says the SPCA usually brings in about 10-thousand dollars a year from the jars.  He says that’s among the highest returns in the province.

In the wake of the thefts Nanaimo RCMP are suggesting stores with charity cans secure them with zap-straps or screws to reduce “opportunistic thefts.”
