SD68 legal bills top $100K in Cedar schools court case

The cost of the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District’s court battle with the Snuneymuxw First Nation over the closure of Cedar-area schools topped $100,000.

Snuneymuxw took SD68 to court over the school district’s decision to shutter Cedar Seconday, North Cedar Intermediate and Woodbank Elementary, as part of a facilities plan. The First Nation argued the consultations were inadequate, considering the impact on Snuneymuxw students.

The BC Supreme Court judge sided with the school district. Still, SD68’s court costs have come to about $105,000. Snuneymuxw may have to pay about $15,000 of that, but it’s not yet clear if they’ll be appealing the decision.
