Approval of new development with less parking could be sign of the times

It could be a sign of changing attitudes on car use.

Nanaimo City Council is allowing a new 103-unit development at 1802 Summerhill Place to go ahead, with a lot fewer parking spaces than it usually requires.  109 instead of 170.

Some worry that will force more cars onto nearby streets, which are already jammed due to high demand for parking because of the hospital.

But Councillor George Anderson says it’s a walkable neighbourhood, so tenants won’t necessarily need a car.

The developer’s parking study also shows the majority of tenants in the building will likely have only 1 vehicle, if that.  They’ll also be providing bike storage and a car share option, through 2 cars from Nanaimo Car Share.
