Teachers plan major rally in Nanaimo as strike heads into second week

Teachers from around the mid-Island are expected for a rally in Nanaimo Monday, as hopes dim of getting a mediator to help the BCTF and the province hammer out a contract before the end of the school year.
Nanaimo District Teachers Association president Mike Ball says the march and rally will be much like the one last week in downtown Vancouver.
The rally starts at 5pm at Maffeo Sutton Park.
The BCTF’s choice for mediator – Vince Ready – isn’t going to take on the job.  Government Chief Negotiator Peter Cameron says it’s a matter of scheduling.
Cameron also says he’s willing to work with the BCTF on another choice, but he adds the union’s position at the bargaining table remains a big hurdle to a successful mediation.
