Art wraps adorn BC Hydro utility boxes in Sechelt

New art wraps are making the streets of Sechelt a little more colourful this week.

Designed to cover BC Hydro utility boxes, the two new wraps are part of BC Hydro’s province-wide beautification program.

That’s because the artwork is printed on graffiti-resistant vinyl decals.

“We’ve incorporated these wraps into our Community Public Art program as a way of integrating art and design into everyday life,” said Sechelt’s arts, culture and communications coordinator  Siobhan Smith.

“There is no shortage of creative talent on the Coast, and this has been a fun way to support and showcase our local artists.”

An open call for artists is issued each year and the winning designs are chosen to suit the particular location of the utility box.

This year’s selections include a lush forest-themed wrap designed by artist/engineer Cambria Hanson and a playful tidal pool design by illustrator Jana Curll.

Since 2016 the district has commissioned 14 artist-designed wraps that cover utility boxes, garbage cans, and even a water fountain.

This latest art wrap project was made possible by a partnership between the district and BC Hydro, and funded in part by a BC Hydro Beautification grant and support from the Sechelt Downtown Business Association.
