District of Sechelt works through retail cannabis policy

The District of Sechelt seems to have hammered out the beginnings of a policy when it comes to the retail sale of non-medicinal cannabis.

Tracy Corbett, Director of Planning and Development presented a plan to council that would open the way for shops to set up in the downtown area of Sechelt and in Wilson Creek.

She said there would be a consultation process.

“There are obligations to do a public consultation, they (the province) list a number of options for whether it’s under your standard notification process, ads in the paper, some go to a public hearing on them. But they set a standard that you absolutely have to consult on it.”

Other early issues council has agreed on are to limit the number of non-medicinal cannabis retail shops to six with the only separation distances being from schools.

It’s very early in the process yet and issues such as fees and charges have to be hammered out as well as signage, odour issues, and security requirements.

The District has had two applications forwarded to them from the province.
