Council candidate withdraws in Gibsons, steps up for mayor

The spot for mayoral candidates for Gibsons didn’t stay vacant for long.

When the dust settled on the nominations last week, Silas White was acclaimed, but this week, he withdrew from the position citing health reasons.

That prompted officials to open another nomination period for the mayor’s chair that runs until next Monday, the 24th.

Bill Beamish, a former CAO of Gibsons and supporter of White, who had been running for council has withdrawn from that race now and will be filing nomination papers for the mayor’s chair.

He said he, “Started off last week and knocked on 475 doors in town and in that context probably talked to 120 people who were home and I felt there was good support for me as a councilor. I am very hopeful they won’t be confused and will translate the support for me over as mayor as well on voting day, so we’ll see.”

Beamish said for the most part, he believes in the path Gibsons is on but he would like to see better communication with residents like the Community Dialogue initiative he oversaw when he was the Town CAO.

He said other priorities revolve around sustainability and are things like social issues, environment, and the economy.

He would also like to ensure the Town has a good working relationship with the Regional District, especially when it comes to water, garbage, and transportation.

With Beamish out of the race for a council seat, there’s still a good race with eight names in the hat for 4 seats.
