Parksville SOS gets national award

The Executive Director of Parksville’s Society of Organized Services, or SOS, is back on the job this week after heading to Toronto to pick up a special award.

The community group won a Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award in the “Social Innovator” category.

Renate Sutherland says SOS has been contributing to programs that help a wide range of residents, from children to the elderly for the past 45 years.  SOS is also the regional coordinator for the Extreme Weather Emergency Shelter and worked with Haven House to open a transition home in Oceanside to help women and children.

Sutherland says it was an honour, and an excellent opportunity to learn about the work other volunteer organizations are doing across Canada

The award also comes with some practical help, in the form of a $10-thousand grant.
