Dry floor vs ice debate continues in Nanaimo

There’s a battle brewing over ice versus dry floor space at Nanaimo arenas.

In past years ice has been pulled from 3 arenas over the summer.

City Arena Manager Darcie Osbourne says the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission took a look, and decided to go in a different direction this summer.

That has a newly formed “Dry Floor Consortium” crying foul.

Groups like the Nanaimo Timbermen Lacrosse Association, and roller derby players, say some teams will get less than one practice per week, and at inconvenient times. The Association’s Bruce Clark also says late hours aren’t safe for players.

The group is meeting Wednesday with Nanaimo’s Recreation Committee to ask that the old arrangement continue.
