Two Vancouver Island watershed on endangered list

The Outdoor Recreation Council has released their 2016 Endangered Rivers List.

On it, is the Cowichan River and Shawnigan Creek.

The organization says rivers across B.C. are threatened by urbanization, pollution, industrial development, damming, excessive water extraction and climate change.

In the case of the Cowichan River, Executive Director of the Council, Jeremy McCall says the river level has been dropping over the years, and his organization blames it on climate change…..

The answer to the problems in the river, according to McCall is to raise the weir, a solution many others have called for.

There were two water bodies on Vancouver Island on the Endangered Rivers list and the other one is the Shawnigan Creek.

McCall says the contaminated soil being dumped near the watershed could leach into the Creek which feeds into Goldstream, an important salmon spawning area.
