Concerned parents urging SD68 Board to keep Rutherford Elementary open

Around 150 people showed up on Wednesday night for a special Nanaimo-Ladysmith School Board meeting.

It was a chance for the public to offer feedback on a proposal to close some schools. Most came armed with signs calling on the Board to keep Rutherford Elementary open.

Nicole Meshen has a son with special needs who graduated from Rutherford. She says moving the Skills for Life program to a different school makes no sense.

Mark Robinson hopes his two young children will be able to attend Rutherford. He says the Board needs to look at the bigger picture, rather than focusing on re-opening Cedar Secondary.

Diedre Tansey with the group Rutherford Open & Thriving says trustees don’t seem to have all the information they need to make such an important decision.

There’s another special meeting on Thursday starting at 7pm at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. A staff report outling recommendations on the proposed closures will go to the Board on November 24th.
