New Dogwood Initiative sponsored poll shows tight races in a couple of area ridings

A new poll focusing on key ridings in the Island Coastal region show races getting tighter.

The Insights West survey has the NDP with 30 per cent support in Courtenay Alberni, the Conservatives at 25 and the Liberals at 10.

For West Vancouver Sunshine Coast it’s the Liberals at 28, Conservatives at 25 and NDP at 18.

The Greens have 9 per cent in both.

The Dogwood Initiative sponsored the polls, and Democracy Director Kai Nagata says there’s also another interesting trend.

“We’ve actually seen uncertainty climbing in some ridings, as the strategic voting conversation starts to percolate through the electorate,” he says. “And, as people come back from holidays and really dig into the election and start to consider their choices we’ve see more people say, ‘you know what; I’m not sure who to vote for.'”

The undecideds are at 24 per cent in Courtney Alberni and 18 in West Vancouver Sunshine Coast.

Nagata says Dogwood’s goal is to give voters in areas where they have a lot of members and supporters as much information as possible about riding-specific trends, and where the candidates stand on issues Dogwood is active on.   They’ve also been running candidate questionnaires.  It’s all laid out on their website.

The poll also included 5 other ridings.

Mario Canseco, Vice President, Public Affairs at Insights West says, “The New Democrats are holding on to the lead in four of the seven ridings, but the Conservatives have improved their standing over the past few weeks. In the North Shore of the Lower Mainland, the Liberal Party is definitely gaining traction.”

The margin of error in the polls is fairly high.

Insights West says it’s plus or minus 5.6 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
