Perennial hot topic BC Ferries to open AVICC AGM

The Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities AGM opened today in Courtenay, and the delegates won’t be wasting any time getting into one of the big issues; BC Ferries.

Jim Abram is chair of the Strathcona Regional District, one of the host communities. He’s also a member of the working group on Ferries made up of RD representatives from around the south coast.

But ahead of that debate, local politicians, activists and residents of ferry dependent communities have been rallying outside the convention.

Carla Neal is one of he demonstrators. She says they need to get a message to the government about the impact of high fares and service cuts, especially in smaller communities.

Abram says he expects the AVICC will once again back the position that fares need to come down, service cuts need to be reversed, and BC Ferries should come back under full government control.
