BC Ferries testing new measuring technology

If you’re taking a ferry trip through Horseshoe Bay you’ll notice a new piece of equipment at the ticket booth.

BC Ferries is testing something it calls a Vehicle Classification System. It uses special sensors to measure length, height and ground clearance.

For now Ferries is using it for commercial vehicles, which pay based on size. Darin Guenette of BC Ferries says at this point they’re not looking at it as a step toward charging by length for ALL vehicles.

Guenette says the pilot project will run for 6 months before they decide whether to use the system at all the terminals.
