3 in custody after RCMP use spike belt to stop stolen truck

A Qualicum Beach man and two women from Port Alberni are in custody after RCMP used a spike belt to stop a stolen truck on Highway 4.

Port Alberni RCMP say they had a call from Oceanside Tuesday afternoon warning that a truck stolen in that area could be headed their way.

Police spotted it around 4:15, being driven dangerously near Cathedral Grove, and followed it into Port Alberni.

RCMP put out a spike belt near the city limits, which forced the truck to a stop.  The man behind the wheel jumped out and tried to run away, but was quickly caught.

A search of the truck turned up drugs and weapons.

“This incident confirms the fact that in some cases vehicle thieves jeopardize the public’s safety as much as those committing violent crimes in our community. The dangerous method in which this truck was being operated could very well have resulted in community members and officers being seriously harmed,” says Port Alberni RCMP’s Cpl. Jen Allan.

She also says all three suspects are known to police.
