Nanaimo Council to decide greenhouse lease, and will likely face protesters Monday

The Nanaimo Community Gardens Society wants City Council to give 2 green thumbs up tonight to a 10 year lease at Beban Park.

With the lawn bowling club leaving, and the Society wants to take over that space and set up 2 greenhouses as part of their Greenhouse Growing Program.

Lee Samya with the Society says it’s a great location. “In such a central, public area we will be able to offer more programming,” she says. “We’re not quite sure at this point exactly what it’s going to be but definitely drawing more of the public in.”

Samya says they want to use the greenhouses to grow organic seedlings to supply school gardens and other local organizations.

There’s already $25,000 set aside by the Parks and Recreation Commission to support the project, and Samya says they will also have to do some major fundraising if the lease is approved.

City Councillors will also face protests today, when they vote on approving a contract for work in Colliery Dam Park.

The Dams Direct Action Group says it’s going to be outside the Council chamber ahead of the early evening meeting, and they’re hoping to make themselves heard at the meeting as well.

The Group has already said it’s looking at some sort of civil disobedience in an effort to stop construction of an auxiliary spillway for one of the dams.
